It's the site of "a guerrilla historian in Gotham" and features crook pictures and stories about everything from the Old Croton Aqueduct in the Bronx to a killer view of the Manhattan skyline from the ruins of the Smallpox Hospital on Roosevelt Island. DarkPassage.com has creepy pics of abandoned schools, prisons, hospitals and mountaintop hotels in New York and all up and down the East Coast. But the best is NYCExposed, which documents the secret life of a young shaggy skater kid and his friends as they burrow underground and scale bridges in search of fresh turf to vandalize. |

| DRINK & DRUGS - 2.1.06 New Jack-Off City Everybody knows New York City these days only pales in comparison to the crime-ridden, graffiti-strewn hell hole that it was in its heydays of the '70s -- the peep-show paradises of Times Square have turned into Big Apple Disneyland, the dope pushers who ran Thompkins Square Park are doing too much time under the Rockefeller Drug laws up in Attica. NYU recently devoted an entire exhibit called Anarchy to Affluence - the fate of some of downtown's most famous underworld landmarks. The punk club Paul's Lounge (where the Ramones used to hang when they weren't giving head for drug money at 53rd & 3rd) is now a Hollywood Video, and the legendary Max's Kansas City (the place where speed freaks and transvestites rubbed cocks with David Bowie, Lou Reed and Warhol's crew) has been converted into a deli. But not all is lost. Places like Holiday Cocktail Lounge on St. Marks -- which started as a Prohibition-era speakeasy and still has the same drunken Eastern European old man barkeep who has been singing along to Sinatra on the jukebox for decades -- is holding on. Other seedy havens for the lowlifes are quietly building their own reputation. One of my favorite hideouts is Blarney Cove, a dive on East 14th with dirt-cheap pitchers that allows smoking in the back and often runs impromptu poker games and weekday wagering on the ponies running at Belmont on the OTB. |
